The Story Within Our Claw
Our logo tells a story of history, culture, and respect for the sea. It reflects strength, history, and the connection between our people and the ocean, carrying values from the Mi'kmaq Nation's long history: knowledge, sustainability, and stewardship.
The tribal symbols on the claw
The claw stands for the strength and abundance of the harvest. Its patterns draw on ancestral art that honours the culture behind our work. The crosshatch designs and pictographs inside the claw resemble ancestral fishing nets and tools, showing how to survive and how to treat nature with respect.
The fish in the claw
A single stylized fish represents many, linking the lobster's instinct with Mi'kmaq tradition. It recalls ancestors who fished responsibly, respecting balance and community, and reminds us to keep harvesting with care, for today and for tomorrow.
The broken arrow of peace
The broken arrow is a revered Mi'kmaq symbol of peace. It recalls the fishing rights disputes of the early 2000s, a critical time in our community's history. We moved forward through open communication, mutual respect, and determination, working together and caring for our coastal waters. The symbol is both a remembrance of past conflict and a promise to keep the peace.
The arrow's sacred colours
The four colours are sacred Mi'kmaq colours, each tied to a direction:
- Red, the South: warmth, vitality, passion, fire, and youthful learning.
- Yellow, the East: sunrise, new beginnings, growth, and enlightenment.
- Black, the West: water, reflection, the spirit world, and inner peace.
- White, the North: wisdom, clarity, air, spirit, and the wisdom of elders.
These colours ground our work in identity, direction, and respect for natural balance.
The comb: spring's arrival
The comb-like emblem represents springtime in Mi'kmaq culture. As the water wakes up, the first lobster traps are set, marking a new harvest year. It stands for new beginnings, hope, and the heart of Seaside Fresh, and reminds us of nature's cycles.
Our promise
Our logo reflects care for our work and honours Mi'kmaq heritage and ancestral knowledge. We follow sustainable practices that protect the ocean and promote unity among communities, and we commit to being responsible stewards of the sea for future generations.
This logo is a story passed down through generations, and now we share it with you. Join us in honouring this heritage and building a future where culture, community, and water thrive together.
